One challenge is that students don't know the standard course of study and would not know the skills that are expected. An option would be give student choices for the type of assessment in format and production but not in content. The teacher could give guided input to create the assessment.

What are some ways that you can integrate the use of questioning into your classroom and student projects?
Students need to justify and support answers to opinion questions.
Answering "why" and "how" are not enough to develop deeper thinkers.
“Thought is not merely expressed in words; it comes into existence through them” (p. 218). Talking helps people think and it helps students learn to think."
Teachers need to follow-up with appropriate feedback, assessment, and instruction
Students can use K-W-L to assess their own learning
Environment where students feel safe and comfortable asking questions
Metacognition where students answer questions about their own learning
